Course Description:
This five-day course is for administrators with a fundamental knowledge of Tivoli Storage Manager. It is designed to provide in-depth administration training with IBM Tivoli Storage Manager 6.1 Extended Edition, at a skill level that is beyond the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager 6.1 Implementation and Administration course. Administrators will be able to control and tune their Tivoli Storage Manager environment, and learn steps to take when troubleshooting. In Tivoli Storage Manager 6.1, the database has been updated to DB2, and reporting has been enhanced. The labs will explore new database management methods and options, and introduce Tivoli Common Reporting. In addition, the exercises involve multiple servers to simulate an enterprise environment. The students will participate in group problem determine exercises, perform a variety of backup and restore processes, optimize data management, and tune the backup-archive client and the Tivoli Storage Manager 6.1 server for optimal performance.
Objectives:
After completing this course, students will be able to accomplish the following:
Who will benefit from this course:
This course is intended for Senior System Administrators and Business Partners who are experienced with IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Implementation.
Required skills/knowledge:
The following list contains the prerequisite knowledge and Tivoli product knowledge an attendee must have prior to taking the course:
Tivoli product knowledge:
Students must have either taken a recent (current or one level back) version of the Tivoli Storage Manager Implementation course, or have hands-on experience administering IBM Tivoli Storage Manager.
General skills:
Recommended courses:
IBM Tivoli Storage Manager 6.1 Implementation and Administration
Course outline:
Unit 1: TSM 6.1 Concept Review and New Features
In this unit you will be presented with a review of Tivoli Storage Manager basics and the new features available for TSM 6.1 in an overview format.
Unit 2: Database and Log Manipulation
New for Tivoli Storage Manager 6.1 is the DB2 database. In this unit you will query, expand, and backup the database and recovery logs.
Unit 3: Storage Pool Manipulation
This unit explains the concepts dealing with the storage pools. You will manage the data storage with collocation, migrating data, moving data, and defining storage pools appropriate to your environment.
Unit 4: Information Access and Monitoring
In this unit you will use of SQL select statements to query the Tivoli Storage Manager database for information. After installing and configuring Tivoli Common Reporting for Tivoli Storage Manager, you will monitor Tivoli Storage Manager server and client activity.
Unit 5: Macros and Scripts
In this unit you will see how writing macros and scripts can help with the automation of common tasks. You will also see that scripts can be scheduled thus reducing the number of schedules required.
Unit 6: Network Configuration and Tivoli Storage Manager Performance Issues
Performance and tuning parameters and options will be covered in this unit. Guidelines will be presented and you will also work with network backup capabilities when there are nodes that exist across the WAN environment from the Tivoli Storage Manager server installation.
Unit 7: Problem Determination Concepts
Since there may be times when Tivoli Storage Manager support will need you to run a trace, this unit covers what traces are and how to run them. Tracing will be examined from the server and client perspective. You will also work with three different problem determination labs where you recover the Tivoli Storage Manager database and primary storage pool after anomalies have occurred.
Unit 8: Backup and Restore Methodology
This unit covers many backup and restore methods not presented in the prerequisite course. You will perform a multi-session backup and restore and an image backup (static and online snapshot). You will also explore open file support, backup groups, and moving data by node.
Unit 9: Enterprise Administration
In this unit you will configure multiple instances of Tivoli Storage Manager servers in support of enterprise administration. Also covered in this unit is the establishment of a configuration manager server for propagation of objects in a controlled methodology from the manager to other Tivoli Storage Manager servers.
Unit 10: Server-to-server Virtual Volumes
The capability to store backup and archive data for a Tivoli Storage Manager server on another Tivoli Storage Manager server is studied in this unit. You will implement virtual volumes for database backups and disaster recovery.
Unit 11: Reports with Tivoli Common Reporting
In this unit you will review reports on data collected during the class.
